I finally figured out a way to reliably back up my old VHS tapes to a digital format! It's an odd, three-step process that's probably a lot less painful than using my old capture card hooked up to a VCR. I don't think my computer's processor is quite fast enough to keep up its pace for long. Fortunately, I don't need it here.
We might not have ever gotten our DVD Recorder's time set right to record a tv show, but if I just set it to record straight-away, it's golden. So I awkwardly connect the VCR through the DVD recorder and play the tape, recording onto DVD as we go. Once that's done, I take the DVD to the computer, and convert the VOB file to MPEG using a program called MPEG Streamclip. Sounds confusing, I know, but once you get the program installed right, it's pretty painless. After conversion, I copy the file onto my external hard drive, and it's ready to go!
